A fastener was received to investigate the corrosion. The threaded end of the fastener was
sectioned to expose the center of the fastener. The chemistry was determined using x-ray fluorescence.

Brass that was checked for susceptibility to stress corrosion cracking.
Group C (top photo) failed.

Solder bond evaluated for acceptability to ANSI/IPC A-610

Backscatter photomicrograph of the same bond as above showing evidence of
no bonding between the lead and solder pad. |

Thermal batteries were received for evaluation of the TIG welds.

Another TIG weld evaluation

Zinc chromate plating on mild steel was examined to determine if microfissures were present.
If present, did they extend through the plating and into the mild steel?

An aluminum beryllium part with a conversion coating was received to determine the thickness
of the coating at the thickest section. A sample was cut from the part, mounted, polished, and the
thickness measured with an Amray scanning electron microscope (SEM).
