P3 Portal Monitor
The P3 Portable Portal Monitor is a rugged field-deployable system for
automatically and unobtrusively detecting radioactive material on
individuals or objects. The system monitors for radiation without the need
for a system operator
Detected materials or contamination activate visible
and audible alarms. The alarms continue until radiation levels return to
normal and an acknowledge pushbutton is activated. An external alarm jack
allows the P3 to trigger remote alarms circuits
Personnel walk through the detector portal space just
as they would through a doorway. The detectors can be positioned to
measure radiation in the upper torso or other areas of concern. The
detectors can be used in parallel as shown in the photos to the left, in
series, or individually. The system can also be configured for efficiently
measuring vehicles and objects.
Each detector is housed in a rugged weather-tight
container for transport and operation. The support structure fits into a
third container for transport. The unique rugged design ensures that the
P3 can withstand the shock and vibration of shipment and rough handling in
field environments. Each container weighs less than 20 kg, allowing for
one-person deployment and setup. The monitor operates for 24 hours on the
internal rechargeable batteries, or can be powered by any external AC or
DC source.
The system uses high volume, high efficiency plastic
scintillators for maximum sensitivity. Background measurement and
compensation occurs automatically. A unique energy discrimination
algorithm allows improved differentiation of contamination and radiation
sources from natural radioactivity.
Although the P3 is shipped with factory default settings for energy thresholds and does
not require a connection to a PC for operation, a PC can be used to set
alarm levels and adjust energy thresholds by the user. Once the user
enters the desired parameters, the P3 operates in a stand-alone mode.
